LATEST REPORT

Since
Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans region in August 2005, GCR
has played an active role in quantifying and analyzing the storm’s impact as well as the region’s
recovery. One of our most important endeavors is tracking the recovery
of Orleans Parish through a variety of indicators and determining the
degree to which the city’s population has returned. Periodically,
we publish population estimates to help the public better understand
the pace at which residents have returned to various neighborhoods.
GCR
is eager to support the recovery by providing unique, accurate, and
meaningful data to our leaders as well as our clients.
We have a full suite of demographic and GIS services to support
the strategic needs of public, non-profit, and private clients. For
more information, please contact Greg
Rigamer.
GCR’s latest population estimate for New Orleans is 288,000, or approximately 63% of its pre-Katrina population. The city continues to repopulate steadily; in fact, the months between July and October, during which New Orleans grew by 14,500 residents, saw a slight increase in the pace of resettlement. Analysis of this latest estimate, an overview of repopulation patterns throughout the city, and an updated on the population of the metropolitan area are available for review in the PowerPoint presentation below.

Above is a map of New Orleans.

pre-storm population.
Blocks shaded green have
greater than 80% of their pre-storm population.
